President SO, Jin Kwang of Korea Saemaul Undong Center visited two villages(Silana and Nabavatu) in Fiji which have implemented Saemaul Undong projects and had a time to communicate with villagers on August 26.
Silana village where 200 villagers live has been implementing living-conditions improvement projects through separating garbage and recycling as well as income generation projects by cultivating coconut and ginger.
About 380 people have lived in Nabavatu village located in Vanua-Leva island which is one of the most important islands in Fiji. Ponipate Vonuqaqa who completed Saemaul Undong training course last year organized the SMU Village Development Committee. Twelve members joined the committee and they have implemented various Saemaul Undong projects.
Local residents, especially, are looking forward to increase their farming incomes by cultivating sandalwood used as a basic ingredient for perfume, soap, etc. and Yasin, which is a high-priced fruit grown in greenhouse.
President SO emphasized Saemaul Undong spirit of diligence, self-help, and cooperation. Also, he described “Saemaul Undong which started for rural development has become a motive power of economic and social development of Korea. Based on Saemaul Undong spirit, I think people in Fiji would contribute to not only prosperous future of the next generation but also world peace and prosperity since it has abundant resources and potential.”
